Windsor’s first independent opera company, Abridged Opera begins their summer season this Sunday, June 25 at 2:30 p.m. with a Duelling Divas concert in Leamington, ON at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 311 Sherk St., Leamington, ON.

Abridged Opera has been finding their place in Windsor’s diverse art scene since January 2017 with a free concert for the community to help introduce opera and the “abridged” style. Two successful operas followed, Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte and a sold-out performance of Hansel and Gretel in collaboration with 4th Wall Music at the Kordazone Theatre. An enthusiastic audience at The Bank Theatre in Leamington enjoyed an encore performance in May.

As summer nears Abridged Opera looks forward to their summer season beginning with a Duelling Divas concert featuring Executive Director, Erin Armstrong and Director of Operations, Alyssa Epp. The concert will see the two women duke it out onstage for the best high notes, who can sing louder and more fun competitions. They will invite several “divas in training” to the stage to join the fight.

In July, Abridged Opera’s Amelia Daigle will participate in the Windsor Walkerville Fringe Festival with a one woman show depicting the famous gypsy, Carmen in a psychological thriller adaptation. Daigle wrote the story using pieces from Bizet’s opera Carmen, other folk elements and flamenco dance. The show will be performed six times during the festival. July 22 at 5:30 pm, July 23 at 3:30 pm, July 25 at 4:15 pm, July 26 at 12:00 pm, July 29 at 12:00 pm and July 30 at 11:45 am.

August will wrap up the summer season with a fully staged, two-hour abridged version of Carmen at Wagner Orchards and Estate Winery. The audience will enjoy wine and tapas outside in the barn as the tragedy of Carmen unfolds around them. Two shows will be offered on August 19th at 7:00 pm and August 20th at 2:30 pm.

Abridged Opera will also make appearances at the Canada Day Fireworks Celebration (July 1st) in Leamington, at the Kingsville Folk Fest (August 12th and 13th) and for the Sip and Savour festival in Leamington (August 19th).
