Windsor’s first independent opera company, Abridged Opera (AO) is launching the first half of its 2018 season February 11 with a free concert for the community at All Saints’ Church (330 City Hall Square W).
After a very successful 2017 season, Abridged Opera now has more than ten operas under their belt and is ready for another incredible season in Windsor and Essex County.
The Season Launch concert will will feature selections from the upcoming season as well as crowd favourites, like the Song to the Moon from Dvorak’s Rusalka and be performed in the sanctuary at All Saints’ Church.
Abridged Opera will be joined by a number of University of Windsor students who will be making their professional debuts with AO this season. The performance is free to the public, as Abridged Opera welcomes new audiences into the world of opera in Windsor. They will gratefully accept donations and are offering tax receipts for any amount over $20.
Abridged Opera was founded by Leamington native Erin Armstrong as she pondered ways to make opera more accessible to a broader audience base. Following her return to Windsor in 2014 after completing her Masters and a number of years singing abroad, Armstrong kicked off AO’s first season with Puccini’s Suor Angelica, collaborating with University of Windsor students and Grade 12 students from the Walkerville Centre for the Creative Arts program. The following year, AO performed Boito’s Mefistofele and Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors. In 2016, in association with Music Moves Kids and the Winsor Jewish Federation, Abridged Opera organised a school tour and performance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, of Hans Krasa’s children’s opera, Brundibar. Upon returning, Erin was joined by other local singers, Alyssa Epp, Brianna DeSantis, Amelia Daigle, Christine Turingia, Kaitlyn Clifford, Adam Iannetta and Kate Reynolds to expand AO’s team.
In that first expanded season, Abridged Opera produced The Medium (Menotti), Così fan tutte (Mozart), Hansel and Gretel (Humperdinck) in partnership with 4th Wall Music, Carmen (Bizet), James Bond: An Inconvenient Lie (MacDonald) and sold out The Turn of the Screw (Britten), a collaboration with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra at Willistead Manor.
