Severe weather and tornado warnings couldn’t deter race fans from the 30th anniversary of the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix this weekend. Nearly 100,000 gathered in the Motor City to cheer on the drivers for three days of racing fun from Friday, May 31 to Sunday, June 2.
Along with the racing, the Grand Prix celebration featured a number of exciting fan engagement activities in the Meijer Fan Zone. Live music highlighted the entertainment stage all weekend long with national and local acts, including an appearance from local country music superstar Frankie Ballard and Stone Temple Pilots with their Marine City, Michigan lead singer Jeff Gutt. Autograph sessions from all racing series, appearances by legends from Detroit’s professional sports teams and interactive games and displays were also showcased in the Fan Zone, along with a wide variety of food and beverages with a Detroit flavor throughout the festivities.
On the racing side, winner Scott Dixon crashed on Saturday but placed first Sunday for the second year in a row, finishing nearly two seconds ahead of the pack. It was the 45th career win for the five-time series champion from New Zealand, and his third championship on Belle Isle.
The Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix ran from Friday, May 31 to Sunday, June 2, and featured the cars of the NTT IndyCar Series, the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the Trans Am Series. More than 1,200 volunteers help out the event and estimates suggest the event makes a $58 million economic impact to the area.
