Stepping into The Colosseum at Caesars Windsor on a balmy Sunday evening, I was a first-timer, a virgin to the razzle-dazzle world of drag. But by the end of the night, I felt like I’d been embraced and initiated into a flamboyant, close-knit family. RuPaul’s Drag Race Werq The World Tour 2023 was, in a word, electrifying.
The setting was grand, fitting for a show like this. Caesars Windsor, with its legacy of hosting spectacular entertainment, was adorned in shimmer and sequins, setting the tone for what was an unforgettable evening. Fans of all ages, donning feather boas, glittery eyeshadows, and sky-high heels, gathered to celebrate 15 glorious years of RuPaul’s iconic show.
The intriguing premise of the queens being “trapped in the Netwerq” added a layer of intrigue. But the real heart of the show was the ensemble cast of drag queens, led by the ever-sparkling Asia O’Hara, the enchanting Daya Betty, and the fierce and fabulous Kandy Muse. Each queen brought their A-game, a unique charisma and charm that made the stage come alive.
The collaboration between Voss Events, World of Wonder, and MTV was evident in the scale and production quality. The lights, the music, the costumes, and the choreography were nothing short of world-class. The storyline was easy to follow, even for someone who hadn’t kept up with all the episodes of RuPaul’s Drag Race. It was a spectacular blend of theater, concert, and fashion show.
The audience’s energy mirrored the vibrancy on stage. Cheers, hoots, and claps reverberated through The Colosseum, each performance eliciting louder and louder responses.
For someone attending a drag show for the first time, this was an eye-opener, a lesson in acceptance, and a celebration of diversity. It was heartwarming to see so many people, irrespective of age, gender, and background, come together, united by their love for drag and the artistry it represents.
