Scrooge1This past weekend at the Capitol Theatre in Windsor, the Windsor Dance eXperience (WDX) wowed audiences with a spectacular twist on Charles Dickens’ classic, “A Christmas Carol.” Celebrating their 65th production, WDX has once again proven their mastery in transforming literary masterpieces into mesmerizing dance narratives.

In this innovative rendition, Ian MacDonald shines as a modern-day Scrooge, whisking the audience along on a magical, time-traveling journey. Guided by the chain-laden Ghost of Marley and visits from the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come, Scrooge confronts his life’s pivotal moments alongside his younger incarnations, brilliantly portrayed by Gracie Mulveney and Carson Diemer.

Each ghost was portrayed with distinctive flair: the comforting Ghost of Christmas Past, the authoritative Ghost of Christmas Present, and the ominous Ghost of Christmas Future, adding layers to the narrative.

Remarkably, this story unfolds without a single spoken word, relying instead on a fusion of expressive dance, emotive choreography, and dynamic staging. The ensemble, featuring over 50 gifted young dancers, breathes life into this tale under the guidance of seven diverse choreographers.

The production’s visual splendor is a feast for the senses. Jaz Moneau’s lighting design bathes the stage in a warm, antique sepia glow, creating a perfect backdrop for Brian Velocci’s vintage street scene. Complementing these visuals are the meticulously crafted, period-style costumes by Roxanne Liebrock and her team.

At the helm of this artistic endeavor is Tiffany Chan, WDX’s founder and artistic director. Chan’s selection of Christmas music weaves seamlessly with the dance, evoking a rich tapestry of emotion and narrative. Her leadership and vision are palpable throughout the show, with Chan herself noting, “this production was a team effort with everyone adding their individual spice to our Christmas Carol stew.”

For those craving a theatrical treat this holiday season, Windsor Dance Experience’s fresh take on “A Christmas Carol” is a must-see. It’s a show that dances its way right into the heart, with a sprinkle of holiday magic and a dash of timeless charm.
