Prepare yourself for some hepped up jazz and big band music during the July 5th First Friday at Cheeky Monkey. Local band The BobCatz will be playing live in store for the evening.
The Bobcatz consist of five talented and seasoned musicians: Robert Martin (lead vocals, keyboards) – he is a classically trained musician and those skills enable him to chart the arrangements for BobCatz. A former member of an instrumental group called the Sunset Jazz Band, he currently plays with the local band The Casuals. Bob can also be found playing the grand piano at the Waterfront Café in Bridgetown, Barbados every February and March; Michael Murphy (clarinet, saxophone) – also a former member of the Sunset Jazz Band, Mike can be found playing at the Ipperwash Beach Club, Olives restaurant and busking at various locations around southwestern Ontario. During the winter months Mike provides many sail boaters in Florida and the Bahamas with the sweet sounds of his horns; Sue Furlotte (harmony vocals) – her extensive classical music education provides her with the ability to create the harmonies that help define the BobCatz’ sound. Her contralto voice range provides the perfect counterpoint harmonies to our soprano vocalist; Sue Auty (harmony & lead vocals) – a lifetime of singing with her family has enabled Sue to contribute sweet soprano harmonies to the group. Also a guitarist, she is part of a large group of musicians that get together weekly at the Sarnia Yacht Club; Daniel Martin (guitar, bass) – another former member of the Sunset Jazz Band, Dan’s story includes: the music program at Western University, music teacher, 12 years in local music theatre, bassist for the local instrumental group, Fatcatz and newly formed cover band, Night Moves.
While at Cheeky Monkey, take note of the artwork on the walls surrounding The BobCatz. It is the colourful and scenic creations of local plein air painter, Bill Walters. This exhibit and sale is titled humourously enough, ‘The Easel Has Landed’. It will be on display until the end of July for you to enjoy viewing or purchasing one of his works.
Join in the fun of the July 5th First Friday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Cheeky Monkey records & more store located at 130 Christina Street North on the corner of Cromwell.
