Stars On Ice is returning to Windsor for the first time in many years when the show takes to the ice at the WFCU Centre on Wednesday, May 3 at 7pm. The entertaining celebration of ice skating champs will be brining four-time World Champion Kurt Browning, 2014 Olympic Silver Medallist Patrick Chan and two-time Olympic Silver Medallist Elvis Stojko to the City of Roses for an exhibition of skating skill and grand dances, including a sample of a few of the elements that made them champions at the Olympics. It’s also the first time these three celebrity skaters have shared the ice together.

YQGrocks had a chat with Elvis between practices in Halifax this morning and he’s geared up to return to Windsor after more than a decade.

“The last time I was there was with a show called Celebration On Ice, which was before I took a break from skating for a few years,” he says. “Last year was my first year back in 10 years and I’m excited to tour again and to skate in Windsor. I still love skating for the fans. If I wasn’t having fun, I wouldn’t be doing it anymore.”

Since his last big Stars On Ice tour in 2006, Elvis switched gears to car and cart racing, married his wife, model Gladys Orozco, and lived for 12 years in the picturesque lake and mountain town of Ajijic, Mexico before returning home to Canada to enhance their respective careers.

Along with skating, Elvis has been involved in the television and film industry, which has seen him in five feature movies and an episode of The Simpsons. He also got to live out a lifelong dream of being in a theatrical musical when he hit the stage as Billy Flynn in the Toronto production of Chicago: The Musical.

For this year’s Stars On Ice tour, Elvis is glad to be touring with friends and other passionate skaters, which also includes Canadian Pairs Champions Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford, Olympic Bronze Medalist Jeffrey Buttle, World Silver Medalist Kaetlyn Osmond, World Bronze Medalist Gabrielle Daleman, Canadian Silver Medalists Lubov Iliushechkina and Dylan Moscovitch and Olympic Gold Medalists Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir on select dates.

“I just love the camaraderie in the skating community,” Elvis adds. “It’s always awesome being on tour with friends and fellow skaters who are so passionate about their performances – it makes me a better skater and lifts my performances higher. I’m not sure how much longer I’ll be skating, but it still feels good, so I’ll keep going until it doesn’t.”

The 45-year old Newmarket, Ontario born Olympian will be performing two pieces at the Windsor show, including a slower one to the music of Breaking Benjamin and one he describes as more of a tribal routine.

“I’ll still be skating in my style for the fast one, but it’s a lot more tribal than anything I’ve ever done before,” he reveals. “This one is a bit more serious and it really pushes my speed and power skating skills and I know that’s what everyone loves to see.”

Tickets for the Windsor show range from $12.50 for seniors and youths to $125 for floor levels seats. Visit www.wfcu-centre.com or www.starsonice.ca for more information.
