Heathers

The St. Clair College presentation of Heathers: The Musical, opens tonight at the Chrysler Theatre in Windsor. It runs until Saturday, April 29.

The musical adoption is directed by Melissa Williams and stars Jessica Wilson as the lead character. We spoke with Wilson this morning about the show and what she plans to bring to it during her performance.

“Heathers is one of my favourite movies and it’s a cult classic,” she says. “Winona Ryder plays her in the movie and I just love her, so this is a real treat for me. I think this is such a great show. It has comedy, but it also has a deeper meaning. It talks a lot about bullying and is sort of a life lesson within a comedy show.”

The year is 1989. Join our hero Veronica Sawyer in the halls of Ohio’s Westerburg High, ruled by a cruel and unforgiving royal family: The Heathers. When Veronica rejects the evil regime in favour of her new boyfriend, the dark and mysterious J.D., she is forced to answer the question – who gets to live and who has to die? Darkly funny, romantic and moving, this musical takes the audience on a roller coaster of emotions as Veronica wades through the deep and murky waters of high school and teenage angst with sarcastic wit.

“I’m playing Veronica very different from the movie,” she reveals. “I’m bringing a little more nerd to the role. I think she’s very quirky and I love that she’s very human. She tries very hard to stay true to herself throughout the whole thing.”
