Korda Artistic Productions should offer free Kleenex tissues with this weekend’s debut of Strangers Among Us, a touching drama/romance that centers around Alzheimer’s Disease written by Canadian playwright Aaron Bushkowsky. It’s going to be a tear-jerker.
Directed by Candace Hind and Tracey B. Atin, Bushkowsky’s play takes us into the midst of the growing storm of chaos and dementia, where the central characters, Michael and Gabrielle find each other. Their connection, their romance, provide them with a lifeboat. Through their story, we see the impact on their families, whose challenges are explored truthfully as complex, sad and often funny. In the setting of the care facility they are in, we meet the other characters, and their central caregiver Robyn. These characters: Leo, Mary and Mary, are portrayed as human beings with colourful personalities, pasts and presents.
To embody one of the central themes of the play: the need for connection, so Korda elected to perform Strangers Among Us in the round in the intimate Korda space. The story will be brought to life by local actors James Neely, Jane Toppi, Michele Legere, Clinton Hammond, Allison Still, Bob Godden, Josephine Scebba, Rick Laforet, Karen Nagy-Tompkins and Janet Karcz. Sarah Jane Fitzgerald serves as Stage Manager.
The show runs at the Kordazone Theatre (2520 Seminole St., Windsor) on May 25 to 27, and May 31 to June 3 with Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening performances at 8pm and Sunday matinees at 2pm. Tickets are $20 (General); $15 (Seniors); $10 (Students) and available at the door or online.
