Roots rock sensation Larkin Poe made a quick Canadian stop at Toronto’s Opera House this past Wednesday March 15th on the current leg of their Blood Harmony tour and the place was packed tight!
Larkin Poe has been making a big impression in the music world for a little better than a decade now and have worked with some major names in the business-like Keith Urban, Steven Tyler and Elvis Costello to name a few. They have been described as “The little sisters of the Allman Brothers” and are equally adept at playing sweet, soulful blues, and rock heavy guitar riffs.
This night the sister duo of Rebecca and Megan Lovell was well rested after a couple nights off and they delivered the goods. Starting with the song Strike Gold, the first three songs were all from the latest album Blood Harmony. In fact, of the 16 songs played this night, nine were from Blood Harmony, practically the whole album.
The crowd was loving it and the energy was flowing between the band and its fans. Rebecca Lovell could sing the phone book and make it sound beautiful. As proof she talked about her love of ketchup chips and proceeded to literally sing her praise of poutine just before launching into one of my favourites, Might as Well Be Me.
Rebecca then announced to the crowd that they will be performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live next Monday and they were going to practice a short version of Bad Spell for the show. The song is 3:15 on the album, so I think she was just pulling their legs. Right after that they went into a spirited version of Wanted Woman which is a kick ass song and really got the crowd jumping. For the encore they played another great song off of Blood Harmony, Deep Stays Down, which is a true, swampadelic song and a great end to a great night of music. I hope they start playing some South Western Ontario dates in the future. More people need to have the opportunity to see this incredibly talented duo.
Opening the evening was Tall Heights, a duo from Boston, Mass who played a very interesting set of electrofolk music featuring singer/guitarist Tim Harrington and singer/cellist Paul Wright. My best description of their music would be atmospheric Simon and Garfunkel. They’ve been around for a few years, and a couple of their songs have had massive plays on Spotify. For their last song of their set, they moved to the front of the stage and played completely unplugged. You could hear a pin drop the audience was so quiet. I will have to explore their music a little more.
