An all-Canadian, star-studded ensemble joins forces with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra to present the concert version of Puccini’s famous opera Madama Butterfly at Windsor’s Capitol Theatre on January 17 and 19, 2020.
Madama Butterfly is one of Giacomo Puccini’s greatest works and one of the most popular operas in the world. The opera tells the tragic story of Cio-Cio San, a Geisha, who falls in love with B. F. Pinkerton, a U.S. naval officer, while he is stationed in Japan. Formed through layers of symbolism, musical history, and diverse cultures, the opera is filled with amazing music and memorable arias that help make it a favourite of opera goers both old and new.
The all-star troupe – led by Music Director Robert Franz – features Teiya Kasahara as Cio-Cio San, Taras Chmil as Pinkerton, Jason Howard as Sharpless, Carmen Specht as Suzuki, Dylan Wright as The Bonze/Commissioner, and the return of Ryan Downey to the WSO in the role of Goro. Also joining Maestro Franz and the soloists are the University of Windsor Chamber Choir & University Singers, led by Chorus Master Bruce J.G. Kotowich.
This is not the first time the WSO has staged an opera-in-concert. Over the past five years the orchestra has brought to life Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Bizet’s Carmen and Puccini’s La Boheme to sold out houses. The WSO is pleased to offer audiences the opportunity to see and hear live performances of great operatic works in their own community.
