Professional Bull Riders Canada Elite Cup Series returned to London Ontario for the PBR London Classic this past Saturday, June 1st. Canada’s best riders as well as riders from Australia, Brazil and The US, thrilled the sold-out crowd trying to last 8 seconds on 2,000 pounds of ornery bull.
No. 1 ranked Cody Coverchuk from Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan looked to extend his lead in the series this night, and with more than 70% of his rides making the 8-second buzzer, he was the man to beat. Overall the bulls owned the night with most riders getting tossed fairly quickly.
Riding “Almost Gone” in the first round, Coverchuck set the bar high with his 8-second ride for a leading score of 86.5. Only 7 of the 29 riders managed to make it to the buzzer that night and only Callum Miller of Warwick, Queensland, Australia had gone a perfect 2-for-2 when Coverchuk was announced as the final rider of the night.
The excitement was evident, with everything coming down to the number one rider against “Landham Kid”. Coverchuk made the 8 in 4 of 7 previous matchups with this bull, so it could have gone either way. Tonight was Coverchuk’s night though and he rode to an impressive 87.5 points for a total of 126 points and a series lead of 345.5 points over No. 2 Jake Gardner of Fort St. John, B.C.
Australia’s Miller garnered 90 points as the only other rider to go a perfect 2-for-2 and continued to gain ground in the standings moving up to the 13th spot. Garrett Green of Meeting Creek, Alberta finished third on the night with a second-best point score of 86 points, and reigning PBR champion Dakota Buttar was fourth.
