American Celtic punk band, Dropkick Murphys, from Quincy, Massachusetts joined forces with Clutch and Hatebreed for a loud, sweaty and jam-packed night of live music in Detroit Rock City.
On Sunday September 29 Dropkick Murphys, along with special guests Clutch from Frederick, Maryland, and Hatebreed from Bridgeport, Connecticut, packed a rowdy crowd of black t-shirt wearing, beer thirsty and blood hungry crowd-surfing rock-concert-goers into the Masonic Temple in Detroit for a night of moshing, swinging fists, chorus chanting and just general shenanigans. The beer lines were long, and the lines for the washrooms were even longer.
Hatebreed opened the night with a violent circle pit that spun like a whirlpool full of angry over-sized men throwing their fists in the air and striking anything that got in their way. Big giants bumping off one another and pushing each other around in circles. The strong base of dedicated Hatebreed fans included a large number of Canadians that was recognized by lead vocalist, Jamey Jasta, who gave a shout out to the fans from Windsor.
Clutch took the stage next and satisfied the audience with a setlist that included classic hits such as Spacegrass from their self-titled album, Electric Worry from the album From Beale Street to Oblivion and Rats from Transnational Speedway League: Anthems, Anecdotes, and Undeniable Truths.
By the time Dropkick Murphys took the stage the main floor was packed tight and sticky from mass amounts of spilled beer. The stage lights came on and music blared with a high energy in standard Dropkick Murphys fashion. They played familiar cover versions of I fought the Law and Just What I Needed and delivered original hits First Class Loser, The Boys Are Back, Prisoner’s Song, and Worker’s Song to a tentative crowd. They closed out the night playing Rose Tattoo, I’m Shipping Up to Boston, and Until Next Time for their encore and invited a large crowd of fans from the audience to join them on stage for the finale. It was madness! My ears are still ringing! Warning: Beware Europe, they’re coming for you in the new year!
