ArkellsIt’s been 10 years since Hamilton rockers Arkells released their debut CD. Since that time, the band has won Juno awards, performed with legends like The Tragically Hip and they’ve brought a new sound to the rock world. They headline Sarnia on Saturday night (July 28) as part of Bluewater Borderfest, with Matt Mays and Dear Rouge, along with openers Rodney James and The Riot and Windsor’s Dave Russell and The Precious Stones.

This year, Arkells released a new single called People’s Champ which rose up the Canadian rock and alternative charts, giving the band a total of nine Top 10 hits since 2008’s Oh, the Boss Is Coming! It’s a precursor to a new album that is expected to be released later this year.

We spoke with the band’s lead vocalist Max Kerman about People’s Champ, new music and touring.

You'll be in Sarnia this weekend for Bluewater Borderfest - You've been to Sarnia before.
Seems like your always on the road. I bet you're excited to get back to Europe again in the fall.
Tony just brought a son into the world in June. How do you guys find the time for family
Do you bring family on tours?
People's Champ is the latest single. How did that song come about?
Who are some of the people you'd actually define as a People's Champ?
The video turned out great. It's so fun.
I saw a cop, a cowboy hat, a navy sailor, a guy in a hard hat and a guy in a leather jacket. You ony needed an Indian and you would have paid total tribute to The Village People.
I think that video really shows that you guys like to have fun with what you do.
With People's Champ being out for a bit, is there a new album on the way?
You guys had extra cuts for the Deluxe Edition of Morning Report.
You guys are so Hamilton strong. You're not afraid to talk about your home city.
Is it true that band was named after a street name?
I'm glad you didn't live on Head or Barclay streets.
The Rally concert looked like a lot of fun. I heard the show was increased to a full stadium.
