It’s going to get groovy this weekend, baby.
Although it wasn’t planned this way, on the same week we have a new song posthumously released by legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix called Mannish Boy from an upcoming album of unreleased music called Both Sides of the Sky, the Windsor Symphony Orchestra is teaming up with Jeans n’ Classics for an evening of music celebrating the infamous Woodstock music festival on Friday night. The music of Hendrix is obviously alive and well in #YQG this week.
Rolling Stone labelled Woodstock one of the 50 moments that changed rock and roll, featuring concerts such artists as Joan Baez, Santana, CCR, Janis Joplin, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Joe Cokcer, The Band, Crosby, Stills Nash & Young, Sha Na Na, and of course, Jimi Hendrix, who performed his electric guitar version of the Star-Spangled Banner.
As per past Jeans ‘n Classics shows, WSO Associate Conductor Peter Wiebe will take the lead and conduct the orchestra while the Jeans ‘n Classics gang perform the rock and vocal parts.
32 acts performed on August 15–17, 1969 at the outdoor festival before an audience of more than 400,000 people and the experience became the definition of an entire generation of music fans and hippies worldwide. The event was captured in a 1970 Oscar-winning documentary film, complete with open drug use and audience nudity. Although the nudity will most likely be discouraged for this week’s Jeans ‘n Classics show, bell bottoms, tie-dye, and flowers in your hair will be all the rage.
Jeans ‘N Classics is a London, Ontario based collective of musicians who faithfully attempt to interpret the music of legendary rock and pop albums and artists, with their own special and signature flair, bringing the rock and pop aspects into settings like the ones here in Windsor with the WSO. The last Jeans n’ Classic Windsor performance of the music of Elton John sold out the Chrysler Theatre well in advance.
Hendrix fans and Woodstock aficionados might be curious to know Both Sides of the Sky includes a cover version of Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” (tracked months before Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s famous reworking) featuring Stephen Stills on vocals.
The WSO and Jeans ‘n Classics will rock the Chrysler Theatre in A Night At Woodstock on Friday (March 2) at 8pm. Tickets can be purchased online at www.windsorsymphony.com, in person at the Box Office (121 University Ave. W), or on the phone by calling (519) 973 – 1238 ext. 2.
The concert will be hosted by Dave Tymo, morning host at Cool FM.
