When the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, and the incomparable Whitney Houston graced the world with their timeless voices, they left an indelible mark on the hearts of music lovers everywhere. These legendary artists defined an era and created anthems that transcended time and space. Now, the stage is set for an extraordinary musical journey as the sensational LaKisha Jones, an artist who has been likened to Aretha herself, prepares to take Windsor by storm with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra.
On September 23rd and 24th, the Capitol Theatre in Windsor will become the epicenter of musical magic, where the power of Jones’s voice will meld seamlessly with the orchestral brilliance of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra under the skilled guidance of Maestro Robert Franz. It’s an event that promises to be unforgettable, and as LaKisha herself puts it, “I’m extremely excited.”
In an exclusive interview with 519 Magazine, LaKisha shared her thoughts and feelings about this upcoming performance that’s generating a buzz not just in Windsor but across the border in Detroit as well.
Hailing from Flint, Michigan, LaKisha rose to fame through the prestigious platform of American Idol. Reflecting on her journey, she said, “American Idol changed my life when I needed it most.” At the time, she was a single parent facing the challenges of life. The show opened doors, allowing her to continue her musical journey and sing professionally, ultimately preparing her for performances on a global stage.
In a world that sometimes feels disconnected, LaKisha’s humble beginnings in Flint, Michigan, served as a grounding force. “Growing up in Flint was a different experience compared to places like Texas or Los Angeles. It kept me grounded and reminded me of who I am,” she explained. Her grandmother and mother played influential roles in her life, instilling the belief that her gift and talent were blessings from a higher source.
Coming from her hometown, so close to the musical mecca of Detroit, this performance in Windsor holds immense significance for LaKisha: “I’m telling everyone to cross the bridge and come to the show. It’s just around the corner. My mom is even coming to Windsor with me for the entire time.”
Performing with an orchestra is a unique experience, one that LaKisha Jones cherishes. “With an orchestra, there’s a 55-piece orchestra playing these classic songs, and it provides a different emotional depth,” she explained. “The songs come to life in a unique way.”
This special performance features iconic songs like “I Will Always Love You” and “Respect.” When asked about her song selection, LaKisha shared, “These songs are incredibly special to me. Artists like Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston are dear to my heart.” She continued, “When I listen to their voices and hear them tell their stories, it comes to life within me. I adore their songs and how they convey emotions.”
LaKisha Jones has been compared to Aretha Franklin, a comparison she humbly accepts. “It’s truly an honor and humbling to be compared to Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul. I don’t aim to be her; I just want to pay my own humble tribute to these remarkable women.”
When she takes the stage in Windsor, LaKisha will channel her own interpretation of the music, influenced by the greats of that era. She prefers to let the music guide her performance, allowing her to bring a fresh perspective to these timeless classics.
Maintaining vocal health and stamina is paramount for a performer of her caliber. “It’s funny you mention that because I’m performing in Philadelphia with the Philly Pops this weekend,” she chuckled. “I try to preserve my voice by limiting talking, going on vocal rest if needed, drinking ginger tea, using throat steam, and warming up my voice to keep it in top shape.”
When asked about her practice of avoiding excessive talking before a performance, she confirmed, “Yes, it’s essential to avoid excessive talking before a performance, as even speaking can strain your voice. Preserving your vocal health is crucial.”
LaKisha’s close association with Fantasia, another American Idol alumna and single mother, has fans eagerly anticipating a collaboration. “I would love to collaborate with Fantasia,” LaKisha revealed. “I haven’t had the opportunity yet, but I wholeheartedly welcome it. I’m a fan of hers, and she’s a fantastic singer. We both come from the church world, so I’m open to that opportunity.”
LaKisha’s CD, “So Glad I’m Me,” serves as a testament to the power of self-acceptance and embracing one’s true self. Reflecting on the inspiration behind the album, she said, “The inspiration behind the CD was embracing who you are, loving yourself, and appreciating the person God created you to be. I never wanted to be anyone but LaKisha Jones. Trying to be someone else is too challenging and unauthentic.” The album features songs like “Beautiful Girl,” a touching dedication to her daughter, a four-year-old at the time, who is now 20. Jones added, “Interestingly, my older daughter now says, ‘Mommy, that song is ‘Beautiful Girls,’ it’s for both of us.’ The songs on the album reflect my personal experiences and feelings at that time.”
Balancing a burgeoning music career with single motherhood was undoubtedly challenging, but LaKisha emphasizes the importance of her support system. “It was undoubtedly challenging, but I’m grateful for my mother and a lady named Gladys Smith, who was a godsend in Texas,” she revealed. “When my mom couldn’t be there, Granny, as we call her, stepped in. I knew my children were well taken care of, fed, and had their homework done. They’ve been with Granny since they were in diapers. I’ve been blessed with a support system that truly functions like a village.”
When asked if her daughters have shown any interest in following in her musical footsteps, LaKisha shared, “The younger one is into theater and recently auditioned for a musical theater production of ‘Descendants.’ She sings and acts.” She continued, “The older one is a dancer, trained in tap, jazz, ballet, and pointe. She danced throughout her childhood and high school but stopped when she got to college. I told her she should teach dance part-time, but she decided against it.”
It’s clear that the Jones family is overflowing with talent, and whether or not they choose to pursue careers in the arts, they have an inspiring role model in their mother.
As for what the future holds, LaKisha Jones has no plans to slow down. She has two symphony shows in her repertoire that promise to captivate audiences. “One is called ‘To Whitney with Love,’ a two-hour symphonic tribute to Whitney Houston, with nods to her inspirations,” she revealed. “The other is ‘Queens of Rock and Soul,’ honoring women in rock and soul music, including Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Donna Summer, and more.”
LaKisha’s ambitions extend beyond these symphony shows though. She aspires to return to Broadway, setting her sights high and believing that opportunities will continue to open up for her. “I’ll keep working toward my goals and dreams,” she declared, “and strive to be the best mom and role model I can be.”
As the countdown begins to the nights of September 23rd and 24th, one thing is certain: Windsor is in for an unforgettable experience with the incredible LaKisha Jones and the Windsor Symphony Orchestra. It’s a celebration of self-acceptance, resilience, and the power of music to touch our souls and remind us of the beauty of being ourselves.
